Welcome to the Coventry Heritage Detector Society website
The Society exists to promote
and carry out the fascinating hobby of metal detecting. From humble beginnings
in 1978 we have grown to be the foremost metal detecting club in the Warwickshire
area.
Our membership limit is set
at 56. The reasoning behind this limit is the practicality of accommodating
members at digs on farm land and the number of cars we can safely park.
The Society meets regularly
on the third Wednesday of every month at Westwood Heath, Coventry. At these
meetings members can discuss their latest expeditions and show their finds.
Any news items regarding our hobby are discussed and there is usually either
a slide show of finds from club digs or we show a metal detecting themed film.
After a break for tea and coffee we hold a raffle and our ‘Finds’
competition.
Members bring along their finds
to these meetings and we do have some very knowledgeable members, who will
always be pleased to assist with identification. Some of our club member’s
finds can be seen in our gallery pages.
Our AGM is held in November
each year when the secretary and treasurer present their annual reports, and
any issues regarding the Society’s constitution etc can be raised. Officers
are either nominated or re elected for a further year at the AGM.
Like other metal detecting clubs
we carry out the practical side of the hobby by arranging to search on farmland
for which we have previously gained permission. These searches take place
on Sundays and we try to arrange a dig each fortnight throughout the year.
The digs are restricted to members only and each member enters their finds
onto a provided field map giving the approximate position of the find. At
the end of the dig the finds and maps are handed in for identification, recording
on the club’s database and the best items are photographed. The database,
field map and photographs are used to produce an attractive farm book which
is later presented to the land owner. We have found that our farm books are
well received by landowners and kept as a permanent record of the farms history.
We have a good relationship
with the local Finds Liaison Officer, Tom Brindle, who covers Staffordshire
and West Midlands. Tom is based at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, Chamberlain
Square, Birmingham, B3 3DH . Tom comes along to many of our meetings where
he records member’s finds and assists with identification. Contact details:-
Telephone: 0121 303 4636 or by e-mail at tom_brindle@birmingham.gov.uk
We offer the public a free recovery
service for lost items such as rings, keys and even farm machinery. Our members
are only too pleased to assist with these searches and are also available
to help the police with the recovery of any items for forensic purposes etc.
The Society occasionally makes
donations to charities, including The Warwickshire & Northamptonshire
Air Ambulance Service (WNAA) and the agricultural
workers' charity, the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI).
We are able to supply speakers
for illustrated talks to schools, clubs, societies etc. Please contact Mr.
Brian Pollard (02476 453380) for details.
We are of course always pleased
to hear from members of the farming community who may be willing to allow
us to detect on their land.
All Society members are also
members of the National Council for Metal Detecting (NCMD) and as agreed with
the National Farmer’s Union (NFU)
are fully covered for Civil Liability Insurance (limit of indemnity £10,000,000)
underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance P.L.C.
All Society members observe
the code of conduct dictated by the National Council for Metal Detecting,
copies of which can be found at NCMD ( a copy
of the NCMD “Code of Conduct” is also available to view on this
site).
